The Life of a Student

The Life of a GROWING Student

Hello and welcome back to the Life of a Student! We are in our seventh month of year 17 and we have all come so far! We are over halfway through the school year and the end is in sight. To celebrate how far everyone has come, today’s blog is all about growth. I wanted to find out how far our students have come over the course of their Hogwarts career, so I have talked to four lovely people who have grown a lot as students. I’d like to thank Violet Torres, Ashley Victoria, Calliope Adder, and Florence Potter for doing interviews with me and letting me learn about your super cool lives! So, let’s get right into it!

--------------------------------------------------

Me: What was your first impression of Hogwarts?

Violet: When I first got to Hogwarts, I was really overwhelmed. All I could think about was how I was just another student, and I didn't feel like I could make an impact. My parents told me so many stories about their adventures and I was really afraid that I wouldn't be able to live up to their expectations.

Calliope: Hm... my first impression of Hogwarts... I was honestly a bit overwhelmed, I had tons of homework that I really just threw myself into, and then socialized just a bit... but I loved all the people immediately. I just think myself as a nervous first year needed a bit of time to adjust.

Florence: When I first arrived at Hogwarts, I was truly amazed. The landscape, all the new amazing people and the castle itself! It was definitely an interesting and new experience, but it was also scary. After all, I was starting a completely new chapter in my life. I'm a half-blood, but I was never really involved with magic. My father's parents didn't accept him marrying a muggle, so when I was growing up I was not close with that side of our family. Therefore, arriving to a place that is literally the definition of magic was thrilling, but also terrifying. It was also very tough for me, because... my mother was sadly not able to be there with me that day. I always imagined the first day I arrived to Hogwarts, and I imagined to spend that day with my parents. It wasn't easy knowing that my mother is never going to see me as a Hogwarts student. But I know she is in a better place now.

--------------------------------------------------

Me: Do you have a favorite class? What did you think your favorite class would be before starting at Hogwarts?

Violet: When I got to Hogwarts I thought that potions would have been my favorite class. Don't get me wrong, I find it enjoyable! I guess I thought potions would be like baking and it sort of is, but I find it hard to follow the recipes. Left to my own devices, I would have a lot more fun experimenting to make different potions. Transfiguration and Charms are my two favorite classes, probably because I have found a rhythm in those classes that makes the work flow easily.

Ashley: Yes indeed, I have! My favorite class is Care of Magical Creatures as it fascinates me. I love studying about animals and might as well become a dragon tamer someday. I also love Potions, and Muggle Studies. But all of these subjects fascinate me anyways, but the truth? I've always been passionate about creatures, especially lethal creatures since I was a kid. I thought to myself that Charms might be my favorite subject as I ate my first ever dinner in Hogwarts just after my sorting, but...I confirmed to myself that creatures are my passion, and every CoMC class always made me happy, every encounter with a creature is just exciting! So then Charms was fourth on my list and Care of Magical Creatures is my shining number one!

--------------------------------------------------

Me: What has been your favorite part of this school year?

Ashley: My favorite part of this school year was making friends.. and of course, schoolwork! I love to make friends, and I love to see them all smile after I give them a compliment or a nice, humorous joke. I love them all, and I am a truly loyal friend. Shout out to Jean Whisp, Lexi Bautista, our darling headmistress Ms. Aquila LaPierre, Florence Potter, Cordelia Vessalius, my cool sister Seraphina Lafayette, and Peach Jupiter, and all my other besties!!! I love to know that my next years in Hogwarts won't be lonely, and I will do my best to cheer them up! And with schoolwork… doesn't it just feel soooo rewarding after you submit your work! I honestly feel very glad to know that there is such thing as assignments, because they help me understand things much more. I appreciate to know that our darling and dashing professors do their best with making their lessons fun, so I do a lot of effort with my work. Doing work honestly feels very rewarding.

Calliope: This school year, I can definitely rule out looping. That was a struggle. But the best... oh how can I choose? Probably just being able to practice magic again, I truly missed it. I was able to keep in touch with my friends over the summer, but also seeing all my friends face-to-face again was wonderful as well... probably those two, if that's an option?

--------------------------------------------------

Me: If you could go back and talk to yourself at the beginning of your Hogwarts career, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Violet: If I could go back into time and give my past self advice for Hogwarts, it would be to not be so defensive and learn to enjoy the ride. I spent way too much time trying to read other people's intentions and worrying about schoolwork, I forgot to live my life and enjoy Hogwarts while it lasts!

Calliope: I would tell myself not to be so nervous. I could honestly tell myself that now. Meeting new people truly gives me a bit of a fright, but I have gotten better to just be myself in situations I find uncomfortable. Just tell myself that "Hey, let yourself just relax and make friends without worrying. Don't be caught up in your grades, it's okay if you misspelled a word." Things like that.

Florence: If I could give myself an advice before Hogwarts, it would be definitely something like "Don't be so stressed out. It will be alright". It sounds pretty lame, but trust me - I don't think I can even explain how stressed out I was when I first joined Hogwarts. I was worried - literally - about everything. Classes, friends, teachers even... But I really think it was all pointless now. Hogwarts turned out to be an amazing place, full of incredible people. So far I've a lot of friendships, and I really enjoy attending all the classes. I'm just on my second year, but I am loving Hogwarts so far, and I hope that future will look the same.

--------------------------------------------------

And a bonus question for Calliope…

Me: You were one of the loopers, so did you learn anything from the experience of being stuck in a time loop? How did being stuck in a time loop affect you as a student?

Calliope: Being a looper... I can't really know exactly what I did at times, I couldn't control my actions, sometimes I could see and hear people talking to me, and I was itching to be able to see and talk to them again, because it was like I hadn't seen them in forever. I was there, I could sometimes see them, but I couldn’t really interact and get to see them. It was a bit torturous. I learned that I shouldn't go back in time I suppose... ever. I also couldn't do any of my assignments either since I was in a loop, so I fell a bit behind in that as well, I have quite a bit to catch up on. But it's truly not all the schoolwork and things I missed that I worry about, it's just the feeling of seeing but not really processing that keeps coming back. Don't recommend, but I doubt, and hope, no one will get caught in a loop for a very long time.
