The Life of a Student

The Life of a Fifth to Seventh Year Student

Hello and welcome back to the Life of a Student! Year 18 is going by like the snap of our fingers and it will be exam week before we know it! This means that we will be losing yet another group of amazing seventh years, which is very sad. So, I wanted to talk to a few of the older students at Hogwarts to find out what life is like from fifth year on. I’d like to thank Vladimir Teppes, Isla Brisbane, and Akilah Zhivanevskaya for doing interviews with me!

--------------------------------------------------

Me: How busy are you as an older student?

Vladimir: Well, as an older student, and becoming an adult in the muggle world. I have had to balance many things, from my work for the wizarding school, to my muggle job, and also making sure to do my daily duties and take care of my youngest siblings. So, in short, saying I was busy would be an understatement.

Isla: Busy-but-not-busy. It feels like ... I have to study for 15 classes, I have to practice Quidditch, I also have to write my articles for The Quibbler, but I still have quite a lot of free time, so I cannot say that I'm very busy, but I cannot say that I don't have anything to do either!

Akilah: OOG - As an older student on site, I think I get pretty busy balancing school IRL and being on WoP as a grep watching chat, locking topics, etc but its always such a great experience meeting and talking to so many people and longtime friends as well as making new ones. IG - As one of the oldest prefects, I think I have my hands full making sure students are following rules while at Hogwarts and keeping up with my routine as a Prefect. I keep up fairly well taking all the final classes and preparing for my exams which will be coming up soon!

--------------------------------------------------

Me: Are you nervous for O.W.L.S/N.E.W.T.S?

Vladimir: Yes. It is a big moment in my life and it shapes who you plan to be. In muggle terms, its like going to highschool, it is one of those things you don't want to mess up for it determines if you can get 'accepted' into a wizading job.

Isla: I've faced O.W.L.s before, so ... I'm not as nervous as I was before. Aside from the materials, I think we will be having a more-or-less same atmosphere for N.E.W.T.s. And I'm sure I will be able to study well, so less nervous, definitely!

Akilah: OOG - I should hopefully take the right amount of exams and graduate this time haha xD But not too nervous after knowing about the fandom for a while now. Fingers crossed! IG - I've been waiting for this moment to graduate and try to figure out what I want to do so it's not entirely nervous but more of a jittery excitement for the future and whatever awaits me! I hope to study hard and do my best on this exam.

--------------------------------------------------

Me: Do you have any plans for once you graduate?

Vladimir: Well, do I have any plans...you see that is a tricky question to answer. You can 'plan' to be something but find yourself drawn to something else. Though, the one thng that will remain consistent is the fact that I will work hard, and care for my family. I did want to try and be a Healer though.

Isla: Well ... I'm planning to stay on The Quibbler, that's the first. I want to keep writing as a journalist, but when I graduate, I am no longer a student journalist! Other than that, I would probably take a few graduate classes. I really want to study more about Transfiguration, aaand maybe signing myself up for a professional Quidditch team. Someone gifted me a book for it, so I thought ... why not?

Akilah: OOG - I have thought of several courses for Akilah to follow especially for backstory purposes and since I've already have one character graduate I am thinking of doing something drastically different even if they are both incredibly similar. IG - I've been throwing around the idea of going for something in the Ministry maybe or exploring a passion for the arts and becoming a musician. I've thought of Auror from being a prefect or a quidditch player professionally but I guess it just depends on what happens. I might take a long break after graduation and travel for a bit to dabble in different interests before pursing something finally!

--------------------------------------------------

Me: What has been your favorite part of attending Hogwarts?

Vladimir: My favorite part...well, thats another hard question. I love the school, it has shaped me into who I am today, from the adventures with the wolves, to the crazy parties we used to throw. I would say the most amazing part from my time here, would probably be meeting all the amazing people, and also speaking with the professors. A lot of them are very kind.

Isla: Meeting new friends, learning new spells, being lazy in the common room, having new pets, aaand basically everything! Everything that is not dangerous, that is. XD

Akilah: OOG - It's been such an honor being a part of the WoP US staff and community getting to be a role model as a prefect and help out around site, honestly the people both new and old are my favorite. Every conversation and relationship I build is just so nice and some have turned into true friends more oog and I am so thankful for that. IG - Out of attending Hogwarts is the family I have both on the Prefect team as well as when I was one of the captains on the Gryffindor quidditch team. Being a part of those two were so much fun and taking the classes, meeting students, all of those friends are why I've loved being at Howarts for the past years.

--------------------------------------------------

Me: If you could give one piece of advice to a first year student, what would it be?

Vladimir: My word of advice is this, when you feel like crying about something, or you are scared because of how much you have to do. Play it safe, and ask the assistant teachers for help, don't do an assignment if you don't know how to do it. It is always a great idea to ask for help. And also, be wary of the woods, some things are better left alone.

Isla: Hmm ... I think my advice would be: enjoy your time as best as you can! You only have your 7 years in Hogwarts once, so make it the best years of your life! Try new things, don't be afraid to befriend people, and of course, study well so you can graduate with pride. Do as many things as you can so you have no regrets!

Akilah: OOG - If there was one thing I could say to a first year student is please please please read the rules and after that just enjoy yourself and have fun! The site is a great place to interact with people of all ages that are just as like minded on the fandom which is so fun! IG - My biggest advice is study hard but also get as involved as you can! There are so many oppportunities at Hogwarts [jobs, quidditch, taking classes, earning points, etc] and each of them give you a big chance to grow and learn about yourself which is one of the best things I've experiences and it's so nice getting to step up and take advantage of those.

--------------------------------------------------

Thank you for reading! I hope that you learned a thing or two about what it’s like to be in one of the last years at Hogwarts! I would like to wish Vladimir, Isla, and Akilah the best of luck in the remainder of their time at Hogwarts and beyond!

If you'd like to see your life as a student featured here, send me an owl and we can set up an interview!
