Welcome to the first issue of *Student ID: Creature*. In this blog I’m introducing you to some magical animals, and turning them into witches and wizards. Well not actually, because I haven’t mastered animal to human transfiguration yet, but I’m going to be giving them jobs, houses and favourite subjects. First to face my writing is the incredibly cute and annoyingly sneaky Niffler!

House: Like people, sometimes animals don’t just have the traits of a single house. The Niffler is an example of this, but after some research and thought, I decided that this black, fluffy metal detector is a mix of Hufflepuff and Slytherin. Nifflers are gentle by nature and show affection to their owners (those brave people who allow them into their houses) and out of all the houses, this is the most Hufflepuff like. But also, obviously, they will find shiny objects no matter the cost. I guess you could say they are cunning, and that is one of Slytherin’s main traits.

Job: I think Nifflers would make great shop owners. In Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade, this is what they are born to be. If Nifflers were human, they’d be collectors— of butterbeer corks, chocolate frog cards or owl feathers. I’m imagining a bunch of fluffy Nifflers scurrying around a store full of old, random magical items, and it just seems perfect.

Favourite subject: What subject would Nifflers like? What subject would be most useful for a Niffler? To answer those questions, I had to step into the mind of a Niffler I invented named Christie. So I had Christie’s brain on, and I started think about school and what I would enjoy when— OOH, IS THAT SOMETHING SHINY??! This method was a fail.
I said farewell to Christie and after some thought decided that Nifflers would definitely like charms. There is so much they could learn… it would be useful to them when they needed to sneak a shiny object away from watchful human eyes.
