Written in the Stars || Orion

Good day everyone! Yes I know this blog is a bit off schedule but who cares! It's a blog! An out of the world blog- pun not intended Anyway! This week we are going to be learning about Orion, yes! Interesting type of contellation!

Now this constellation can be found in the Celestial Equator that can be viewed from Earth. The Orion Contellation is one of most recognizable type fo contellations that you can see from Earth. It's named after Orion the hunter due to the shape that it shows of a guy with a bow and arrow!

This is a story that can be told in different type of settings and different styles, which in that case I will be doing both! In one of the myths, it says that Orion started fall inlove with Pleiades, daughters of Atlas and Pleione. He was trying to get them to love him but Zeus decided that they would be better up in the sky away from Orion. It is also said that he can still be found chasing the sisters through the night sky!

In another one, it is said that Orion had fallen in love with Merope, who was a beautiful daughter of King Oenopion. (Who despited Orion). One night, Orion got drunk and got a bit feisty, and with the King's anger, he blinded Orion, and banished him from the land that was the island of Chios. Hephaestus had felt sorry for the blind, wandering Orion and offered Orion help and be his eyes for the helpless hunter. Eventually Orion found an oracle that said if he went east toward the sunrise, his sight would be restored. With believing in the oracle, he did what it said and his eyesite came back.

Orion's origins is in the Sumerian mythology, mostly known in the myth of Gilgamesh. The Sumerians associated the story of a hero fighting the bull of heaven. (Resembling Taurus) They would call Orion URU AN-NA, meaning “the light of heaven.”

There is also a myth that doesn't involve a scorpian. Artemis who was the goddess of hunting, fell in love with the hunter and in order for her to stop her from giving up her vows, her brother Apollo challeneged her to try and hit a small target in the distance with her bow and arrow. Due to herself not knowing that it was Orion, the arrow met its mark, making her loose her loved one.

Most of the time you will hear about Orion's past with a scopion, but each one differ from one mythographer to another. In another tale, Orion told Artemis and her mom that he was the best hunter in all of the kingdom. What he didn't know was that the Earth Goddess heard him. She sent a scorpion, which stung the very tall man to his end. ALL of the myths result in Orion leaving, and they mostly all are with the same outcome- scorpion stinging him. That's why they are opposite of each other in the night sky.
