The Switching spell is a spell used to switch the position of two objects. It is said to be a spell that transfigurates two objects to look exactly like the other.
The Switching spell was taught to fifth-year students during the school year 1988 - 1989 they used the spell to switch out piggy banks with guinea pigs, top hats with rabbits, pillows with armadillos and lastly tortoises with hares.
Neville couldn't cast the spell in October 1994, a fact that made Minerva McGonagall criticize him for not being able to cast such a simple spell.
Under the preparations for the first round of the Triwizard Tournament Hermione suggested to Harry that he could use the spell to turn the dragon fangs into wine-gums, but it was later scrapped due to the spell being impractical.
At Harry Potter's Ordinary Wizarding Level exam he forgot about the spell.
