Sometimes also called Mandragora, the mandrake is a sentient plant with a root that resembles a human. When it reached full maturity, their cry could be fatal.
Earmuffs must be worn to protect yourself when replanting these plants, since their cries can be harmful. They are said to have similar personalities to humans, being moody like human babies and rowdy like human teens. Madam Pomfrey also claimed that mandrakes have acne. Once the mandrake reached full maturity, their roots could be cut up and used to make the mandrake restorative draught. Their leaves were also used in potions, most importantly the potion used in the steps of becoming an animagus. Dugbogs and Flesh-eating slugs enjoy mandrakes as food.
Several deaths happened because of mandrakes, occurring in 1890, nearly in 1912, and an attack happened on November 28th in 1926.
They were a part of third and second year Herbology class taught by Professor Sprout. During the battle of Hogwarts, they were used as weapons against Death Eaters by Professor Sprout, Neville Longbottom, and other students.
1988 - 1999: Jacob's siblings and Liz Tuttle helped spray slugs off of mandrakes. First year students also learned about mandrakes and after failing to wear earmuffs were treated by Madam Pomfrey and Jacob's sister.
1992 - 1993: third year students were taught how to repot baby Mandrakes. Their rise in numbers helped brew the restorative draught, which helped reverse the students petrified when the chamber of secrets was opened.
2010s: Mandrakes were caught up as foundables and had to be fixed by the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.
