The Hot Seat is the place where I reveal the true life story of a beloved writer here on WoP. We delve into their WOP life history, their characters and a few juicy secrets.
If you've ever wondered why people join WoP and stay here for so long,
or perhaps wondered how it all began for them?
The Hot Seat is going to reveal it all!
For my next victiminterview, I am stoked to have our Study of Ancient Runes Professor, the one, the only Caius Bistail.
So lets dive in...
What made you originally join WoP and how along ago was that?
Believe it or not, Caius is my first account!
This means I joined one year ago or so - according to my profile, June 21st, 2024. I actually came from a different Harry Potter school website, seeking for a community that was more active and passionate. I remember that the welcome I received was extremely warm, and suddenly I found myself hanging around more and more!
Well we're all glad you found us, do you remember what you were most excited about when you were on the site?
Originally, it was the homework, but soon it became the Mischief in chat.
It's no secret that I am downright obsessed about them: I love how you have to combine knowledge and speed to be the first to answer. I also enjoyed Quidditch a lot, but haven't had that many opportunities to play it!
Hopefully you'll be back on Quidditch play soon enough then, do you remember the first piece of homework you submitted?
Hmm, I reckon it was one of the introductions but I do not know which one it was. I do remember, however, the most formative piece of homework I've written for Caius: without a doubt, it's Charms, Year 1, Week 9. The entire genesis for Caius is that he was forced to grow up too quickly, and that created the false belief that he could do anything by just refusing to give up from getting solutions. Charms, Year 1, Week 9 is when he realises that he has a lot to grow, that there are severe flaws in his worldview and that sheer strength of will is not the only thing required to progress: introspection and finesse are equally important.
I love how you've used homework to enhance your character, I believe in that. How many characters have you written?
Three characters in total for different sites! I have a personal rule of one site, one character - I'm Caius Bistail at WoP US, Darius Morgenstern at WoO US and Wulfric Brayburn at WoO EU.
That's so cool, do you and your characters have anything in common?
Oh, yes, absolutely! My design principle for my characters is that they will always have a strength and a weakness of mine, and their narrative is based on learning how to use that strength and temper that weakness. Caius is academically sharp, but his academic nature made him pretentious during his childhood; his narrative arc is in realising that there is value to distinctive viewpoints and that sheer intelligence is not all there is. Darius is steadfast and never backs down from a fight, but he had horrible trust issues and he refused to put himself in a position to be hurt (either by failing to train or by refusing to be open with others), even when he's tired or cognisant of the fact that he would live better if he allowed himself to have friends. Wulfric is an innovator by heart, but that is only the case because his feelings are immensely dulled (actually, nearly nonexistent) and he ends up using his creativity in ways that annoy others and may even hurt himself.
Well I hope Caius doesn't hurt himself too much, we love our ancient runes Prof, what jobs have you had on site?
I always orbit around Teacher jobs, because writing and canon weaving is really what I enjoy doing the most! I have also worked as an Assistant Teacher, but Teacher is really my passion.
Do you have a favourite shop item or pet?
The Invisibility Cloak is probably my favourite item!
What comes first, the name or the FC?
100% the name! I believe that names have power and what I pick for a name very strongly connects with who the character is. The faceclaim comes later, depending on what I feel would fit the character's visual identity.
Love that, I tend to agree with you too. What's been the most fun topic you've written?
There are so many to choose! Although I can't claim having written it, Labyrinth Whispers is probably the most amusing topic that I've participated in - but I guess that's expected, I love a good riddle!
That title is perfect too, what’s your favourite thing about WoP?
The sense of community. I find that people are always interacting with one another over here, and they do so in a meaningful way - I see a lot of support in chat, people who genuinely enjoy sharing their stories and reading students' homework, so many different topics that are filled with brilliant writing. It makes the community feel vibrant.
Can you share a secret about Caius we may not know?
People wouldn't know it from a first glance, seeing how much of an academic he is, but Caius knows how to play the drums quite well!
With the hair, I can definitely see him rocking out on the drums. If Caius wasn't a professor, what would he be doing?
He'd definitely be working towards being an Alchemist. I mean, he already does that, but he'd probably do that even more intently. There's also a good chance he'd work as an Unspeakable while pursuing his independent research, much like his parents!
Loved getting to know more about Caius, I hope you've enjoyed it too.
If you'd like to find yourself in The Hot Seat, then send me, Lucian Nightwell, an owl and we'll make it happen.
