The Hot Seat is the place where I reveal the true life story of a beloved writer here on WoP. We delve into their WOP life history, their characters and a few juicy secrets.
If you've ever wondered why people join WoP and stay here for so long,
or perhaps wondered how it all began for them?
The Hot Seat is going to reveal it all!
Now many shiver in the boots at the very name of my next guest, but I reckon he's an old softie at heart, shall we see if I'm right, please welcome Mr Edgar Thorne, our DADA Professor.
What made you originally join WoP and how along ago was that?
I’ve been roleplaying in free-form style for a very long time and have been looking, on and off, for an inspiring Harry-Potter themed roleplay without finding any whose lore wasn’t restrictive in one way or another. One random day of September 2017, I googled it again without any expectations and WoP EU showed up at first. I tried it as a student and a few months later I chose WoP US as the new home for that character.
Love that, I remember you telling me all about it. Do you remember what you were most excited about when you were on the site?
WoP US was quite different from EU back then, in terms of ambiance. I found it more laid back and spontaneous, even if it did deal with some difficulties owed to the fact that it was the largest of the then existing WoP sites. Also, there were many mature users back then, so in my opinion, it contributed to giving the site a realistic Harry Potter feel because of its blend of darker, more complex topics combined with the more amusing aspects of student life at Hogwarts.
I love the realism myself. Which house were you originally sorted into with your first character?
Edgar is my first and current character; he is, of course, in Slytherin through and through.
Do you remember the first piece of homework you submitted?
It was on EU as Edgar, one of the very first activities I’ve done on WoP, actually. And will it be of any surprise if I told you, it was in Defence Against the Dark Arts? The teacher’s name was Septime Corris, with whom I shared some topics soon after.
As a boy, my character eagerly walked into the empty classroom 3C before everyone and snooped around. In his written assignment, he openly admitted that he looked forward to learning how to fight with magic. He wasn’t a very amicable lad at first!
I remember Septime, another great writer. How many characters have you written?
Only one other, briefly, to accommodate a long-term idea with other players who have since moved on. But I intend to “reuse” that character, at least In an NPC way for now. Their name will be changed slightly, however.
That's really cool, I was initially created as an alt to flesh out a storyline. What jobs have you had on site? Have you had a favourite?
The only other job I’ve had was here on WoP US, on my early days. I’ve been AT for Muggle Studies until the DADA job became available and I got hired soon after. I’ve been there since, with a small break in 2022-2023. It was and still is my favorite! I also had the honor of being offered the very first job for Auror Training, but I had to let it go because it was too tough. For the students, not for me.
MS, I wasn't expecting that. You're full of surprises Edgar. Where's your favourite place to topic?
It’s been a while since I’ve indulged in topics, but I think I’ll very much like to explore the “past” in my character’s backstory; Some class-themed ones can also be quite fun. Truth be told, I’d very much enjoy the possibility to have a segment dedicated to adults on the site. Not to do any NSFW stuff or anything, but to explore darker, potentially more dramatic stories, more similar to those in the books and movies.
Interesting, I guess that's why we have the rating system on topics. How do you choose your face claims?
Oddly enough, I’ve never been able to imagine anyone else than Javier Bardem to portray Edgar. I saw the actor in a movie, and he stuck to my retinas.
I love when you know your character that well you can't recast them. Whats been the most fun topic you've written?
An advisory, though: it’s old and features very mature stuff (alcohol, smoking, violence…), as the XXXXX ratings used to warn readers about.
Oooh. I have a link if anyone wants a read. What’s your favourite thing about wop?
Its immense creative potential and ease to use. We don’t have to adapt our characters into a specific spot; for instance, not everyone must join first as students. We can play any character we like and make them evolve with as much freedom the site’s PG rating allows.
I’m an old-school role-player who’s accustomed to text-based RPGs, so WoP’s simple interface feels like a comfy old pair of shoes to me.
We all have one of those...comfy shoes...actually all mine are uncomfortable. What?! Can you share a secret about Edgar we may not know?
Unfortunately, I cannot share his secret at this time, because it might be too upsetting and because it’s a secret! The only two people who do know about it besides him won’t tell either. But you’ll find some hints along the way.
The rejected question. Sad times. What's next for Edgar IG?
Now that I’ve finally got a bit more time on my hands, I might have a long-term idea that would shed some light on Edgar’s lesser-known existence out of the academic community. A project that could involve a club or something similar. Where does that rumor of him having been a Dark wizard come from?
Interesting, that should be fun. Any other comments....
With all that, I’m not forgetting the Dueling Club either. But after having been out of topics and writing for so long, I do wish to put my creativity back on track. So a revision of my backstory and curriculum is in order.
A duelling club you say...my my. Thanks for your time Edgar, it's been intriguing.
If you'd like to find yourself in The Hot Seat, then send me, Lucian Nightwell, an owl and we'll make it happen.
