The Life of a Student

The Life of a Dyslexic Student

Hello and welcome to The Life of a Student: the Reboot! This blog was run about a year ago, and I thought it was really interesting, so I decided to reboot it! In it, I am hoping to highlight the lives of our students here at World of Potter, as well as student lives in general. The general goal is to show off our super awesome students and do the original Life of a Student justice!

So today, I figured a good starting place would be to talk about a student who I am very familiar with: me! For those who don’t know me, I’m Banhi Patil, a first year Ravenclaw. I grew up with my mother, who is a witch herself. I was born in the United States, but my mother is from England, so she brought me back here. She wanted me to attend Hogwarts (as long as I was magical) like she did. So here I am!

I truly believe that I am a true Ravenclaw, because I love to learn, and I am always curious. I enjoy coming up with ideas for inventions, which can seem weird to some because I often try to find non-magical solutions to problems using machines. The other thing that really sets me apart from other Ravenclaws is the fact that I basically can’t read. Now, you might be saying, “What? A Ravenclaw that can’t read? Who is this girl and why is she writing a blog?” I understand the concern. I have Dyslexia, which means that the letters in words get all blurred together and I can’t distinguish them. In one of my first interactions here, I asked a fellow Ravenclaw if his book was about warthogs because I thought the title was Warthogs, A Shorty. It was very embarrassing to find out he was reading Hogwarts, A History instead.

What does Dyslexia mean for me as a student? It means that it takes me longer to complete reading assignments, but besides that, I’m a pretty regular student. I spend too much time on homework and get stressed (a totally normal student thing), and I love practicing spells. I don’t think I can choose a favorite subject yet, but maybe next year I’ll have a different perspective for you all.

So that’s me! My life as a student is pretty normal, even with the challenges presented by Dyslexia. If anyone else reading has Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, or any other challenges, I am always here to talk to! Thank you for reading and I can’t wait to highlight more students in the next edition of Life of a Student!

If you'd like to see your life as a student featured here send me an owl and we can set up an interview!
