Creatures Among Us #5

Wizards have been posing as Magizoologists, coming to front doors and claiming to have had reports of a wild and dangerous animal on the premises of the homeowner. After the “inspection”, the homeowners have reported many missing items and treasures.

Over the past month, my father and I have been investigating some interesting developments in Hogsmeade. The small wizarding village is home to many witches and wizards, as is commonly known, but it is also home to many magical and wonderful creatures. These creatures have been either domesticated or were already safe to be owned as pets.

Near the end of August, while I was getting ready to head back to Hogwarts for my final year, I was sitting in our office near the Hog’s Head Inn when a frantic wizard came in the door. His name was Marty Shoemaker, and we had known the man for many years as an animal rescuer who would find magical creatures in the wild and would save them from predators.

Shoemaker reported that he had been sitting at the kitchen table eating breakfast with his family when the knock came at the front door. A man wearing a black trench coat and a black fedora hat stood there, announcing that they had heard of reports about a ghoul in the attic. The wizard did not give his name, but did reveal a badge that “proved” his legitimacy.

After showing the man up into the attic, annoyance flooding Shoemaker’s emotions as his morning breakfast with his family had been interrupted, the family continued to eat their meal in silence while the “magizoologist” investigated the attic.

Hours after the investigator left, having reported that he’d seen nothing dangerous in the attic upstairs, Shoemaker went up himself to investigate. Not only did he not see any trace of a dangerous creature, but he also noticed the absence of his prized Quidditch trophies from his successful time as Beater for the Gryffindor House, during his education at Hogwarts.

Anyone with information about this fake magizoologist, or with reports of similar incidents where things have been stolen after an inspection for dangerous creatures, are encouraged to report to me or my father at the Shrieking Shack, or simply owl me with the information.
