Ophelia's Declassified Hogwarts Survival Guide
Journalist Team (Daily Prophet)

- From : Melody Santos

Extra, Extra! Ophelia’s got the scoop of the Daily Prophet and you all really want to read it. No, seriously, read this.

Now that I got your attentions from your busy day, I’ve come with a whole new stack of interviews fresh off the Daily Prophets press, that’s right. We’re about to find out the world of those busy salmon colored journalists that work for the one, and only, the amazing Glitterbeard. Oh wait, I mean Pirro. I hope he doesn’t read this.

Truth be told, your girl right here, yes me, has always wanted to be a journalist. I love following that hot trail of a story that ultimately takes you to the truth. Did you know that’s the most important job of a journalist? To report nothing but the whole truth or else you’ll pull a Stephen Glass (Journalism joke just pretend to laugh). I always find my heart jump with glee every time I see a new article up, wondering what this one entails so of course, me being me, I decided to reach out to a few of our Daily Prophet Journalists to see what it’s all about. And low and behold, they certainly blessed us with some juicy and exciting things about their job. Who knows?! Maybe you, reader, will realize your true calling is to the might of the quill and the knowledge of truth and decide to give the Daily Prophet a shot. Maybe the next article I read about Gringotts’ Robberies will be written by none other than you.

What made you interested in joining the job you have?

I love to write. I did creative writing whilst at college and so I have always had an interest in writing! So to write with The Daily Prophet under the guidance of Pirro (Who is AMAZING lets be real here) seemed too good to be true. I just had to apply. Plus isn't the colour just absolutely awesome?!

How long have you been on your team?

Oh goodness. I have been with the DP for a fair while now. I think I am the longest serving DP member, besides Pirro, on the current team. I have definitely been on since the first week of WoP Year 3 ... so as much as i love to write ... maths is not my forte. Around ... four months i think. Someone help me out with the maths here ...

Could you briefly describe your job from your perspective and what it is that you do.

My job at the end of the day is very simple. It is to write for the Daily Prophet. To supply our lovely Pirro with articles he can post for the DP and to entertain all you wonderful students and staff members.

Do you have a daily/weekly routine with your job, if so, what is it?

We tend to have a weekly or bi weekly routine. The job is very flexible. We will request an article topic to Pirro and he will accept or deny it, they're accepted most of the time. We are then given a deadline of which to complete the article by, mainly this is a week. So once we have written the article, we hand it in and then let Pirro edit it, if needed. He will then post it and the whole cycle starts again with a two day break in between.

What’re some of the fun things you’ve gotten to do with your job?

Oooo i have gotten to imagine some very cool situations, explore my love for quidditch a bit more through my sports column articles and gotten to interview some of the WoP US staff who are absolutely great sports when it comes to interviews.

What do you think is the most important quality someone needs to have in order to strive at this job?

I would say they would need to have a good creative side. Grammar and stuff like that can be easily taught, but if you're not creative then this may not be the job for you. So creativity for starters and secondly to be punctual. I think that this is a highly important quality because how would one get article in on time if they are not punctual?

If you had to say something to a student aspiring to join the ranks of your job, what advice would you give them?

Think outside the box but stay in the realms of realism. I think is the first piece of advice and secondly I would just say have fun with it. Apply, have fun and come and get involved. We would love to see some new members try their hands out at becoming a DP or Quibbler Journalist.

What made you interested in joining the job you have?

I love journalism, and I love sharing the news with other people. The Daily Prophet is a powerhouse of information and I had to be a part of it.

How long have you been on your team?

I have been apart of The Daily Prophet for 10 days. But the team is so tight-knit and welcoming. All of the Salmons, including the Quibbler team, are very kind and you feel right at home when you talk to them.

Could you briefly describe your job from your perspective and what it is that you do?

My job is to find topics that are interesting and to create a story to inform other people about that topic.

Do you have a daily/weekly routine with your job, if so, what is it?

Yes. I get assigned my topic and then I spend 1-2 days compiling information and brainstorming ideas. I then take about 2-3 more days to draft our all my information and create a rough draft. Then I take the rest of my time before the deadline to edit and make sure I fit the requirements for the article.

What’re some of the fun things you’ve gotten to do with your job?

I've met amazing people and I've gotten to write what I'm passionate about and I think that will top really anything else.

What do you think is the most important quality someone needs to have in order to strive at this job?

You need to have perseverance. Because writing an article might not always go your way and you can get writer's block. Don't be afraid to ask for help and push through it.

If you had to say something to a student aspiring to join the ranks of your job, what advice would you give them?

Go for it. If this is something you love and want to do. Then do it. The Daily Prophet and The Quibbler always need more people. So write about something you love and enter it.
