Overview
The flobberworm is a creature that is classified with one x, which means that the ministry of magic finds it “boring”. They are said to be up around ten inches when fully grown.
About the flobberworm
A flobberworm is a brown, blue and red worm that doesn’t have any teeth. Flobberworms mainly live off of cabbage and lettuce. Much like a normal worm the flobberworm is identical in both of its ends. Both ends can be used for eating and producing mucus, which is used to thicken most potions.
A rumor started the years that Harry was at Hogwarts. Spread by Draco Malfoy and his group that the flobberworms had teeth and would bite. Those rumours only existed to attack Hagrid's qualification as a professor.
Flobberworms are edible and sometimes the kitchen would serve flobberworms fritter for lunch. They are also highly usable for transfiguration especially for transformation into fritters. Flobberworms are also some of the only creatures living that a student can use summoning charm (accio) on.
History of the flobberworm
During the summer in 1986, Hagrid bred an enormous amount of Flobberworm in the gatekeeper hut. But after breeding them, he didn't really know what to do with them.
Normally Silvanus Kettleburn would teach his third-year classes about flobberworms, but in 1986-1987 Snape needed the worms to thicken potions, therefore the classes from that year first learned about the worm in their fifth year. After the incident with Draco Malfoy and Buckbear in 1993-1994, Hagrid had a third year class taking care of flobberworm, the lessons seemed kinda pointless since the worms didn’t really want to socialise. Most of the time they were just eating kale and cabbage. They ended up dying at last from overeating lettuce. During the exam for 3rd year students that year Hagrid had loads of flobberworms provided, the student had to keep them alive for an hour to pass their exam.
During the school year 1996 - 1997 at Harry’s first detention with Snape he had to sort out fresh and rotten flobberworms so Snape could use the fresh ones for potions. For the assignment Harry chose to use protective gloves.
During the 2010-2011 school year, student Daniel Page needed flobberworm mucus for a potion. He and a friend got some from Hagrid after they helped him brew essence of dittany, so they could help Teartalon and then fight off a forest troll that had attacked Teartalon.
That same year, another student, Kevin Farrell, wanted to learn how to care for a Flobberworm, as he was considering one as a pet. He noted they made good pets if a person didn't mind their indifference and their mucus.
Later on several flobberworm figures were found trapped in magical bubbles. Members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force had to use a severing charm to free them.
