The Forgetfulness potion is a potion which causes an unknown degree of memory loss to the person who drinks it. The key ingredient for the drinks is lethe river water, valerian sprigs and mistletoe berries.

History

In the school years of 1890 - 1891 a Hufflepuff student asked another student if they had any valerian sprigs. As the Hufflepuff student had to brew the potion, but had misplaced their sprigs.

During 1986-1987 a student named Penny Haywood and Jacob’s sibling brewed the potion in complete secrecy. They brewed it so that Penny could erase her own painful memories.

Since the forgetfulness potion is listed as a beginner’s level potion, Severus Snape had his first year students brewing it at their exam before the year ended in 1992.

In the school years of 2009 - 2010 it was brewed by second year students.
