Overview
Reparifarge is an essential, yet basic Transfiguration spell. It is however classed as an untransfiguration because it is used to counter the effects of a transformation spell that was poorly performed and only partially transfigured the target in question.
History
Before the spell was formalized, failed transfigurations often resulted in permanent muddles. Early witches and wizards struggled with creatures for example that were half-desk, half-pig, often leading to the unfortunate demise of the subject…
As the field of Transfiguration became more academic, witches and wizards realized they needed a safety net. Reparifarge was developed to reset the target to its original state by targeting the lingering magical signature of the initial form with this spell.
The spell has been a part of the First-Year Transfiguration curriculum for centuries. It is famously taught early on because beginners are prone to leaving tails on teapots or ears on pincushions for example. The spell is perhaps most famously associated with the teaching style of Professor Minerva McGonagall. She saw the mastery of Reparifarge as an essential safety requirement before students were allowed to move on to more volatile transformations, like turning vertebrates into inanimate objects.
