Overview

Successfully brewing this potion requires an exceptionally large cauldron, one that could easily accommodate an adult wizard. There are also three crucial ingredients. The first is a fragment of bone taken from the wizard’s father without his knowledge. The second ingredient is a portion of flesh, roughly the size of a human hand, which must be freely given by a loyal servant. The third is blood taken by force from a sworn enemy, and this blood must be fresh at the moment it is used, requiring the enemy to be physically present during the brewing process. The remainder of the ingredients, besides water, remains unknown.

History

Voldemort is one of the known wizards throughout history to brew a successful Regeneration potion. He noted it as being “an old piece of dark magic,” which means it was potentially used by other Dark Wizards. Therefore, Voldemort was not likely the person who invented it.

Voldemort’s rebirth On 24 June 1995, Voldemort had Wormtail prepare the potion except for its most crucial ingredients. Voldemort had the flesh within reach due to Wormtail’s presence and could gain easy access to his father’s bone from the grave in the graveyard where they brewed the potion. Harry Potter was seen as his enemy and happened to be present at the graveyard as well. A complex plan managed to get Harry Potter to Voldemort, despite Wormtail’s attempts to persuade Voldemort to accelerate the rebirth process, as there were plenty of enemies within an easier reach. With the three ingredients, Voldemort’s temporary form was put into the cauldron, and he was able to regain his new body.

Using Harry’s blood in the potion, however, would turn out to be a mistake, as it prevented Voldemort from killing Harry. His blood passed Lily Potter’s protection onto Voldemort and anchored Harry to the living world through him. This resulted in the Dark Lord’s defeat only three years later. However, Voldemort believed, because of his lack of understanding of love, that by using Harry’s blood, it would allow him to bypass the protection and enable him to circumnavigate what Harry had robbed him of years ago, which was power. When in fact it actually strengthened it.
