Historical Information

The Hufflepuff Common Room is unique because it is the only one the famous Harry Potter never entered, although it has remained in the same location and kept the same "security methods" for over a thousand years, dating back to the school's founding by Helga Hufflepuff. It is the most secure room in Hogwarts, as it has not been seen by students from other houses for centuries. So the Hufflepuff Common Room remained breached only by its own students.

Unlike other houses, which use spoken passwords or riddles, Hufflepuff uses rhythm. The entrance is hidden behind a pile of huge barrels in a nook on the right-hand side of the corridor. To enter, a student must tap the barrel that is two from the bottom, in the middle of the second row. The tap must be done to the rhythm of "Helga Hufflepuff", which is five taps. The Hufflepuff Common Room is also unique because it is the only one with an active defense mechanism against intruders. If a student from another house taps the wrong barrel or the wrong rhythm, the lid of one of the barrels will burst open and drench them in vinegar.

The room is round and earthy and cozy, one of the most welcoming of all common rooms. It has a low ceiling; the windows are round, too, and set just at ground level. The students look out onto grass and dandelions, and it somewhat always feels sunny down here. The dominant colors are black and yellow, honey-colored wood, overstuffed armchairs, and patchwork quilts. Hufflepuff's house element is Earth, which is why the room is also filled with hanging plants, cacti, and ferns. Some of these plants are magical, waving to students or dancing when they walk on by. A carving of dancing badgers decorates the wooden mantelpiece. Above it hangs a portrait of Helga Hufflepuff, who is mostly seen toasting to her students with a tiny golden cup, which is highly likely to be the famous Cup of Hufflepuff. To get into their dorms, Hufflepuff students walk through underground tunnels that branch off from the common room. The dorm's doors are round, too, looking a bit like barrel tops.
