Howler
| Basic Information | ||
|---|---|---|
| Usage | To emphasize messages containing anger/frustration that usually can’t be conveyed through writing, and to play a letter in a really loud voice, then burst into flames/explode. |
Overview
A Howler is a red envelope with a magical letter in it, enchanted to read the message written in the sender’s voice, usually with a deafening volume and the intention to be publicly heard. Failure to open the letter would increase the heat of the envelope, resulting in an explosion if not opened for a long time. Its purpose is to send messages that are filled with anger/frustration that need more emphasis on them.
History
- In “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, Ronald Weasley receives a Howler from his mother for taking his father’s Flying Ford Anglia to Hogwarts. Neville Longbottom warns him to open it, sharing his experience with receiving one from his grandmother.
- During the 1890-1891 Hogwarts school year, multiple students received Howlers for hexing their professors, having bad grades, entering the Forbidden Forest, and for some, befriending “Muggle Borns”.
- There is also a “Lovebird To Love Note” Transfiguration spell that allows the letter to be verbally conveyed like a Howler, but in a quieter voice.
