Overview
Belladonna, also known as Atropa or Deadly Nightshade, is an existing plant in the Muggle world with magical uses. Notably, it is a poisonous plant and unsafe for human consumption. The plant features a green stem and leaves, with purple flowers and shiny black berries. Hogwarts students learn how to grow and care for Belladonna in Herbology classes. Fluids from this plant are used in Potions classes at Hogwarts. Belladonna is included in the standard potion-making kit.
Specifics
Belladonna is similar-looking to elderberries, so similar, in fact, that a witch named Apollonia Black died after consuming it, believing the plant to be elderberries, which are edible for humans. Belladonna has historically been used in medicines and cosmetics. In the Middle Ages, some witches and wizards believed Belladonna to be the devil's plant.
