History
Honeydukes is a wizarding candy store located on High Street in Hogsmeade Village. In 1641, it was first established. In the 1890’s, the shop was run by Patrick Redding and his daughter, Olivia Redding. The shop is now owned by Ambrosius Flume and his wife, Mrs. Flume, who watches over the shop when Mr. Flume is in the cellar gathering supplies that the shop is running low on. Besides the standard candy that is sold there, Mr. and Mrs. Flume also make the most fantastic fudge and chocolates. Their shop is an extremely popular destination among Hogwarts students when they can visit on the weekends, as well as the people of Hogsmeade. During the holiday season, the store becomes especially packed with patrons.
Honeydukes also has a secret entrance located within Hogwarts Castle that transports you directly into the cellar of the shop. However, this passageway may only be used to travel from Hogwarts to Honeydukes, as there is a stone slide on the Hogwarts end. This passageway may be accessed through the Gunhilda of Gorsemoor Corridor on the third floor of the school. By tapping her statue with one’s wand and using the incantation "Dissendium," the passageway could be opened. More specifically, the passageway opens in Gunhilda’s hunched back, leading down to a short stone slide. The landing is a very narrow, earthy tunnel that rises to a large stone staircase. This staircase has more than two hundred steps, and the trapdoor at the very top is sort of hidden to the eye, so most visitors knock their heads on it accidentally.
Honeydukes also operates and maintains the Honeydukes Express, a trolley of sweets that sells items to the students and staff on the Hogwarts Express. The trolley is operated on wheels through the aisles of the train by a kind old lady.
In the year 1890, it was reported that a Hogwarts student stole some dried Billywig strings for a fellow student, Garreth Weasley, out of the shop’s cellar.
Inside the Shop
The cellar of the shop is filled with wooden crates and boxes, containing an immense supply and storage of assorted treats. The floor is incredibly dusty, with a large wooden staircase leading up to the store's main area. From the cellar, one can hear the opening and closing of the main shop door, as well as the bell above it.
Some popular sweets sold at Honeydukes include:
- Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans: These are jellybeans invented by the elusive Bertie Bott, who created them by accident. He planned to make tasty sweets from food, but one came out tasting like a dirty sock, and he immediately recognized its sales potential. Similar to Muggle jellybeans, except for the wide variety of flavors, possessing almost every jellybean one could think of. The only way to discern the flavor of a jellybean is by eating it or making an educated guess based on its color. The jellybeans could have normal flavors, such as Peppermint, Marmalade, and Chocolate, but were just as likely to have absurd flavors like Vomit, Earwax, and Paper. The jellybean flavors were not just based on regular foods.
- Chocolate frogs: Chocolate Frogs are wizarding sweets in the shape of frogs, made from white, dark, or milk chocolate. Some Hogwarts students play a game where they open a bunch of different kinds of Chocolate Frogs at the same time and let them hop around, trying to catch the chocolate ones and avoiding the white ones. Each Chocolate Frog comes with a collectible card of a famous witch or wizard. Some of these famous figures were known to Muggles as well, but not for their magical abilities. In fact, Hogwarts students are known for collecting and trading these cards.
- Pumpkin Pasties: Pumpkin pasties are treats similar to a Cornish pasty but filled with pumpkin instead. They feature a flaky crust and a lightly spiced pumpkin filling. Pumpkin pasties are seen many times throughout the series, whether on the trolley to Hogwarts, on the return trip, or at the famous Honeydukes. The trolley witch is revealed to have made about six million of them in total as of the year 2020.
