Overview

Arresto Momentum is the Slowing charm or the Braking Charm. It is a charm that can be used to slow the velocity of an object. It has been placed on broomsticks, so they can stop faster. In fact, the Firebolt has an ‘unbreakable’ Braking Charm. This charm is taught to second-years and fifth-years in Charms class.

Effect

It is used to slow or stop velocity, but in two films, it is to stop movements directly rather than slowing it.

It has also been used to cushion falls. For example, Dumbledore once used it to save Harry when he was playing quidditch.

It can be placed on items, such as broomsticks where it helps stop them faster.

History

The charm was invented by Daisy Pennifold, so it could be used as something to slow down falling Quaffles. This allowed Chasers to grab them mid-air.

During the 1890 - 1891 school year, Madam Kogawwa, a Flying Instructor, taught the charm to the new fifth-year students. This allowed them to catch up to their peers outside of Flying class. During the 1988-1989 school year, Professor Filius Flitwick would teach his fifth-year students how to cast this charm.

During the Calamity in the 2010s, the Slowing Charm was used heavily. The volunteer members would use this to slow down and freeze Confonduable. An investigator has used a combination of the spell with the Summoning Charm to harvest hair from even the swift Granian winged horses. So, the investigator found that the hair from the Granians was more potent. It actually reduced the brewing time in the Exstimulo Potion.
