Overview

Fiendfyre also known as the Fiendfyre Curse (Pestis Incendium) is a deadly curse that produces a gigantic and powerful enchanted flame. The flame would take the form of large fiery magical beasts, such as serpents, dragons, and chimaeras. These gigantic beasts would seek out living targets and were extremely volatile. The sentient cursed fire would spread rapidly incinerating everything it moved through. Fiendfyre took extreme skill as well as intense concentration to control as the curse was an advanced Dark Magic. Fiendfyre was one of the very few known substances that was capable of destroying Horcruxes. Fiendfyre could not be extinguished by normal or conjured water or a Water-Making Spell.

Effects

Fiendfyre burned everything it could through the form of large beasts as it constantly mutated into other beasts as well as powerful formless flames spreading rapidly destroying everything it came in contact with. The caster could have the flames go after a set target as well causing it to eventually conquer and engulf the surroundings of the target in flames incinerating any nearby lifeforms and physical forces. The Flames were also able to kill even the caster. This showed that Fiendfyre required someone with exceptional skill and concentration to control it. There is a counter-curse to extinguish the flames, this was known by exceptionally skilled practitioners and not every common witch or wizard causing the danger of the use of this curse for everyone and everything around it to increase. This included the caster themselves as well.

History

• Early September 1927 - Gellert Grindelwald cast this spell in the Lestrange Mausoleum in Paris as a test of loyalty among his followers as well as to effectively kill a large number of his enemies, most of which were Aurors that were there only to arrest him. Vinda Rosier, Abernathy, Nagel, MacDuff, Carrow, Krafft, Credence Barebone and Queenie Goldstein all showing as well as giving Grindelwald their full loyalty all were able to pass through the flames joining his side unharmed. Krall contemplating turning on Gellert did not make it far at all before the flames engulfed her. The black flames were dispelled by the combined forces of Newt Scamander, Propentina Goldstein, Theseus Scamander, Yusuf Kama, and Nicolas Flamel after Leta Lestrange sacrificed herself. The combined efforts saved the entire city of Paris from the destruction and fury of Gellert Grindelwald.
• 1990-1991 - Jacob travelled to Japan after collecting evidence from a captured R member- a Secret Dark Arts group. There he discovered half of a Dark Scroll in a mountaintop cave and was badly burned with Protego Diabolica, the fire set there protecting the Dark Scroll. Jacob was sent to St. Mungo’s in England where he was treated for his severe injuries by Healer Miriam Strout who ultimately saved his life with the help and advice of Albus Dumbledore.
