Overview

Relashio, or the Revulsion jinx, is a jinx that forces the target to release its grip on whatever it’s holding. It works on both living and inanimate targets.

Effects

The jinx is used to make something relinquish its hold on another subject. It appears as a jet of purple sparks. Underwater, this spell fires a jet of boiling water at the target instead. It is also possible that this jinx can act as a counter-spell for incarceration spells and free a victim from the binding ropes conjured via Incarcerous, or from the prison transfigured using Incarcifors.

History

Little is known about the history of the creation of the spell, or how it was taught at Hogwarts. Some known practitioners are listed as follows:

• Bob Ogden used Relashio in 1925 to knock Marvolo Gaunt away from his daughter, who he was attempting to strangle.
• Harry Potter used it during the second task of the Triwizard Tournament in 1995, to free his ankle from the Grindylow’s grip. He also used it on the chains of a dragon during escaping when the trio broke into Gringotts in 1998.
• Hermione Granger used the jinx to free Mary Cattermole from the chains on a chair, and also to force Corban Yaxley to release her arm when she was Disapparating, during the trio’s infiltration into the Ministry of Magic in 1997.
• Ron Weasley used it on Peter Pettigrew’s silver hand when it was choking its owner to death, although the spell had no effect.
