Overview

A bludger was a black iron ball used in Quidditch matches. It was 10 inches in diameter. There were two Bludgers in every match, and they would be bewitched to fly around and try to knock players off their broomsticks. The two Beaters of each team had bats to hit the Bludgers with. They would protect their teammates from the Bludgers, and also aim the Bludgers towards the opponents.

Early Bludgers were simply enchanted rocks. However, they turned out to be too fragile and might be smashed by the Beaters. After some time, Bludgers were made out of lead, but this was too soft and could be dented by the Beater’s bats. which would impair their ability to fly straight. Currently, all Bludgers are made of iron.
