Overview

Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes - also called Weasley & Weasley - was founded by Fred and George Weasley. The shop contained joke objects (i.e. Extendable Ears) and the twins’ special Wonderwitch products. They had a section for Muggle Magic Tricks, which had a steady business despite not being one of the bigger sellers. The shop also sold quite a number of defensive magical objects. The shop originally started as an ‘owl-post service’ when they were in the Burrow and continued from Hogwarts until the store opened.

Historical Information

Fred and George initially developed their products in their room at the Burrow. They would use the owl post to mail the items. However, their mother found out when cleaning their room. She found most of the products dangerous and didn’t support the wild ambitions. She wished that they would get jobs in the Ministry of Magic like their father. Even if she had burned the orders, the twins were still ambitious to open up a joke shop.

To raise money, the two bet their life’s savings on the outcome of the Quidditch World Cup. They had won, but Bagman paid them with Leprechaun gold, which vanished after a few hours. So, their savings were wiped and their dream was put in peril. They luckily got the money from Harry Potter, as Harry did not want his Trizard Tournament winnings of 1,000 Galleons. They accepted only on his insistence, with Harry’s only requests being that they wouldn’t tell Molly about where the money came from and to buy Ron new robes without mentioning him.

While they were in their last and unfinished year at Hogwarts, Fred and George wanted to determine if fellow students would respond the same to the products. Hermione didn’t approve, as the twins did not warn younger students what the sweets would do. Hermione was furious and immediately told them to stop experimenting on unsuspecting students. She insisted that they stop despite their reassurances that they were not dangerous. The twins initially scoffed at the girl’s insistence, but they immediately stopped when she threatened to tell their mother.

After putting a portable swamp on the school grounds and releasing the Weasleys’ Wildfire Whiz-bangs to rebel against Dolores Umbridge, they left Hogwarts to fulfill the dream of the joke shop. The twins were intending to buy Zonko’s Joke Shop to extend their business. However, the Hogwarts security was raised where Hogsmeade trips were cancelled. So, the two saw no point in buying the shop.

The twins were strict with the business, having threatened a boy for attempting to shoplift and charging their younger brother the full price. Their mother was glad to see they were successful and happy with their career despite not initially approving. Then, in the spring of 1998, the Weasleys were found hiding Harry and they had to go into hiding. The twins were forced to close the shop in Diagon Alley, but they continued to sell when they were at their Aunt Muriel’s. The twins fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, and Fred unfortunately died.

After it all concluded, George continued the business even if he wasn’t completely over the loss of his twin brother.
