Overview

The Doxy, also known as the Biting Fairy, is a small magical beast that is at times mistaken for a fairy. The doxy is often found throughout North America and Northern Europe, preferring colder climates. Doxies are a part of the Beast division and are classified as XXX by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. Deeming them no trouble for competent Wizards.

Doxies produce Black eggs which are laid underground. A queen Doxy is able to lay up to five-hundred eggs in one batch, these eggs usually hatch after about two to three weeks. The Doxies eggs, if ingested, can cause severe illness.

History

  • 1926: Newt Scamander, while visiting New York, had a swarm of Doxies in his briefcase.
  • 1927: Newt Scamander kept at least two Doxies in the basement of 9 Sherringford Square.
  • 1988-1989: At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Doxies were used in the All-Wizard Tournament, during which students had to gain control of their brooms that had been hexed with a Hurling Hex and capture a loose Doxy. A cage of doxies were knocked over and multiple participants and spectators were sent to the hospital wing for treatment of doxy bites.
  • 1990: Doxies Infest the Leaky Cauldron, suspected at the time to have been brought in by a suitcase. The solution came in the form of Doxycide. The doxycide was sprayed all over the establishment, immobilizing the Doxies that were destroying the place.
  • 1990-1991: An Infestation of Doxies at Hogwarts.
  • 1990-1991: The Ministry of Magic Experienced a Doxy Infestation.
  • 1990: Charlie Weasley helped his mother Molly Weasley clear an infestation out at The Burrow.
  • 1995: Cormac McLaggen during his 6th year at Hogwarts ate a pound of Doxy eggs a bet, causing him to be unable to try out for Quidditch that year.
  • 1995-1996: Fred and George Weasley used Doxy venom in a popular Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes product, the Skiving Snackboxes.
  • 1996: Harold Dingle tried selling Doxy droppings to fifth-year students, selling them under the guise of being powdered dragon claw; these were confiscated by Hermione Granger.

Defence

Doxies are considered pests that can infest houses, living in the draperies. There are only a few ways to get rid of a doxy infestation:
  • A good amount of Doxycide, a Black colored, foul-smelling potion that paralyzes Doxies for a period of time.
  • A Knockback Jinx, though the queens were more resistant to the jinx.
  • The Venomous Tentacula, whose favorite snack is a Doxy.
If unfortunate enough to be bitten by a Doxy, the said Witch or Wizard must take an Antidote as the doxies produce venom that is very poisonous. The Antidote to Uncommon Poisons is a Potion made up of fire seeds, graphorn horn, billywig stings and chizpurfle carapaces. This potion is used to cure minor magical as well as uncommon poisons such as the Doxies venom.
