Overview

Known to be one of the most lethal creatures in the wizarding world, Manticores are native to Greece. Two different forms of this creature have been noted: the traditional lion-like breed and a giant insectoid breed. Owing to their extreme violence toward humans, Manticores were not offered classification as beings by the Ministry of Magic.

The traditional breed combines a human head, a lion's body, and a scorpion's tail. It is capable of human speech and possesses intelligence comparable to that of a Being. Manticores are also widely known for their habit of singing or crooning softly while finishing their prey.

Unlike the mainstream breed, however, the insectoid Manticore takes the form of a massive crimson scorpion. It is easily recognised by a quill-covered body, four pincers arranged in two pairs, specialised branching antennae, and three stingers, with the middle stinger noticeably larger than the others. Juvenile individuals can be distinguished by their reddish colouring, absence of quills, and possession of only one stinger. Fully grown specimens may grow as large as dragons.

Dangers

Considered to be as deadly as the Chimaera, a creature as rare as Manticores, these rank among the hardest creatures to defend against, given their classification as XXXXX beasts by the Ministry of Magic. A Manticore’s hide is known to repel all known spells. Their hostility towards humans is well known, and a single sting from their venomous tail is enough to cause instant death.

The traditional breed's scorpion tail serves as a lethal weapon. The insectoid breed has specialised antennae that allow it to locate and snatch prey from a distance, and these appendages remain active even when detached from the body. It is also capable of launching fire from its enlarged central stinger, much like a Fire Crab or Blast-Ended Skrewt.

Defence

As Manticores are resistant to most known charms, it is extremely challenging to defend against them with conventional spellwork. However, physical force can still be used against one; dropping a sufficiently large and heavy object onto the creature might bring it down. Additionally, bright light is a significant weakness of this beast, including the light created by the Wand-Lighting Charm.

History

  • In 1296, one Manticore attacked a person and it escaped execution as no one dared to move near it.
  • In 1932, Newt and Theseus Scamander encountered a Manticore mother in the Erkstag prison, where they saw her killing and feeding on inmates before being chased themselves, which they narrowly escaped.
  • In 1957, Norvel Twonk lost his life while saving a Muggle child from a runaway Manticore, for which he was awarded the Order of Merlin, First Class.
  • While attending Hogwarts, Peregrine accidentally released a Manticore onto the school's Quidditch pitch.
  • During the 1980s or early 1990s, Peregrine's younger child encountered a Manticore at the Magical Creatures Reserve and regularly fed and bonded with it.
  • In the 1988–1989 school year, a Manticore was included in the third and final task of the All-Wizard Tournament. During that task, the creature threatened a group of fifth-year students in the Forbidden Forest. The remaining finalists came to their friends' aid and successfully subdued the Manticore through a coordinated effort led by one competitor.
  • Throughout the 1990–1991 school year, Bill Weasley instructed seventh-year students in methods of defending themselves against Manticores as part of an extracurricular evening Defence Against the Dark Arts class.
  • By September 1994, Rubeus Hagrid had succeeded in breeding Manticores with Fire Crabs, producing the hybrid creatures known as Blast-Ended Skrewts.
  • During the late 2000s or early 2010s, a group of young Manticores crossed the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch on their way to the Forbidden Forest. After observing the herd, Luna Scamander, Rubeus Hagrid, and a Hogwarts student followed them into the forest. There they discovered a Manticore mother that had established a lair in the Forbidden Forest and subsequently confronted her.
  • In the late 2010s, a British witch named Theresa Stadt was discovered to have raised a Manticore called Mr Whiskers from infancy. Once informed of the situation, the Ministry of Magic dispatched a Magizoologist from the Statute of Secrecy Task Force to recover the creature. The retrieval of Mr Whiskers was later described as a "remarkably ghastly affair".
